Tip of the Week

August 1, 2007

Our Environmental Tip of the Week is courtesy of Orlando Cerrillo, Loss Control Consultant, Educational Service District 105, Yakima, Wash. The idea was suggested by an employee at his previous workplace.

"At a steel plant I used to work at, we had an auto drilling machine for drilling holes in thick steel sheets/components, which were parts of a steel building. We fabricated steel buildings. We used to use cutting oil in order to keep the drill bit cool while it was drilling the holes. This was messy and not very environmental friendly. A long-time employee and operator of the machine thought of the idea of using a soap and water solution to cool the drill instead of cutting fluid/oil. This worked great, cut down on purchasing/using cutting oil and was worker and environmentally friendly."
